The most serious health risk associated with swimming in a pool or staying in a pool hall is posed by a compound called trichloramine, which is formed as a result of a reaction between chlorine and the organic substances found in pool water mainly due to sweat and urine. The ingested trichloramine irritates and disrupts the epithelium of the upper respiratory tract, causing allergic symptoms in sensitive individuals and increased susceptibility to asthma not only in children but also in adults. Trichloramine also causes irritation and drying of the skin and redness of the eyes. Therefore, it poses an increased health risk to people exposed to this substance on a long-term basis, such as athletes or public pool staff. In addition, it causes corrosion and deterioration of the structure of the pool hall. There are reports of cases where the presence of trichloramine in the air of the pool hall caused the destruction and subsequent collapse of the reinforced concrete frame of the pool hall. Trichloramine is also responsible for the typical pool room smell that immediately tells you that this chemical is present in the air.

The second most important health risk associated with swimming pools and hot tubs is related to the presence of parasitic single-celled organisms Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia that cause serious digestive disorders. There are reports of a number of serious health problems caused by these pathogens, particularly Cryptosporidium, in public swimming pools where chlorine levels are permanently monitored. Thus, it has become clear that chlorination disinfection does not inactivate these single-cell organisms and therefore it is necessary to add a further disinfection step to the water treatment technology in order to eliminate these resistant pathogens. Thus, when choosing water treatment technology, it is necessary to choose a solution that eliminates trichloramine as well as the parasitic single-cell organisms Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia.

Medium pressure UVM systems differ from low pressure UV-C systems in the construction of the UV lamp, which emits a different UV spectrum. This allows UVM systems to eliminate trichloramine and ensure permanent water disinfection, i.e. inactivated bacteria cannot be reactivated as with low pressure UV-C systems.

One of the arguments used by manufacturers of low-pressure UV-C systems against the use of medium-pressure UVM lamps is their short lifetime compared to low-pressure UV-C lamps. This argument applies to most current medium pressure UVM systems powered by standard magnetic power supplies. The lifetime of medium pressure UVM lamps of these systems ranges from 4,000 to 8,000 hours of operation. However, LIFETECH has developed an advanced electronic power supply with a unique technology called LifeAGE®. This major innovation has allowed us to overcome the disadvantages of current medium pressure UVM systems. The lifetime of LifeUVM® medium pressure lamps powered by the advanced electronic power supply with the unique LifeAGE® technology is comparable to the lifetime of low pressure UV-C lamps. We know from users of our systems that the lifetime of LifeUVM® lamps regularly reaches 18,000 hours. In some cases the lifetime has exceeded the incredible figure of 30,000 hours of operation.

Another argument used by manufacturers of low-pressure UV-C systems over medium-pressure UVM systems is the lower efficiency of converting electricity into UV radiation output. This argument, however, must be put in the context of pool water treatment. The electrical power supplied to the medium pressure UVM lamp is used to produce UV radiation as well as to heat the water. It is therefore not true that the use of a medium pressure lamp is energy inefficient. The electrical power supplied to the medium-pressure UVM lamps is efficiently used in its entirety for water treatment.

The installation of the UVM medium pressure system with the unique LifeAGE technology ensures the lowest operating costs while helping to protect the environment. The carbon footprint of this technology is lower compared to standard medium pressure UVM systems. It will be great if you help protect life on our planet.
